What Causes Sensitive Teeth?
Tooth sensitivity is a common problem that can range from mildly irritating to seriously painful. Understanding what causes it is the first step toward treating it.
- Brushing Too Hard: Brushing too aggressively, or using a hard-bristled toothbrush, can wear down enamel and expose the sensitive layer underneath.
- Aging: Tooth sensitivity is most common in people between the ages of 25 and 30, but it can happen at any age as enamel naturally wears down over time.
- Teeth Whitening Products: Some whitening products can cause temporary sensitivity in certain people.
- Acidic Foods: Frequently eating highly acidic foods can wear away tooth enamel over time, leading to sensitivity.
- Gum Disease: Inflamed or receding gum tissue can expose the roots of the teeth, which are not protected by enamel and are highly sensitive.
