What is the Purpose of Dental X-Rays?
Why Use Dental X-Rays
Dental x-rays allow a dentist to see what is happening beneath the surface of the teeth and gums, revealing problems that wouldn't otherwise be visible.
X-rays can help detect:
- Cavities between teeth
- Bone loss from gum disease
- Abscesses or cysts
- Developmental abnormalities
- Some types of tumors
Types of Dental X-Rays
Common types include bitewing x-rays, periapical x-rays, and panoramic x-rays, each providing a different view of the teeth and jaw.
Safety of X-Rays
Modern dental x-ray equipment uses very low levels of radiation, and lead aprons are used to further protect patients during the process.
