In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, we have put together a list of simple steps to care for that adorable smile.
- Brush your teeth at least twice daily. After breakfast and before bed is best. If you can, brush after lunch or after having a sugary snack.
- Take your time while brushing. Spend at least 2-3 minutes each time you brush. To help keep track of time, use a timer or play a song you like.
- Brush all your teeth. Be careful not to just brush your front teeth. Spend time on your side and back teeth. To make sure that all areas of the mouth are cleaned, children under the age of 5 years old should have help.
- Brush your tongue. This helps keep your breath fresh.
- Learn how to floss. It feels weird the first few times, but soon you will be a pro. The floss gets where no toothbrush can get no matter how much you brush. Slip waxed floss between each tooth and make a ‘C’ around the tooth.
- Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. Have mom and dad buy a toothbrush with soft bristles. Some toothbrush bristles change color when it’s time to be replaced.
- Rinse your mouth with water when you can’t brush. This will help wash away debris.
- Eat healthy. You must have a balanced diet for your teeth to develop properly. Eat lots of fruit and vegetable. It is necessary for healthy gum tissue to develop around your teeth.
- Limit snacks. Most snack foods are high in certain kids of carbohydrates, such as sugar and starches, and put you at extra risk of tooth decay.
- Drink water instead of soda. The plaque on your teeth is just waiting for sugar to arrive.
- Don’t chew on hard objects. This includes non-foods and foods such as pencils and ice.
- Always wear a mouth guard when playing active sports. This will keep those pearly whites safe.
- Visit the dentist twice a year. Your dentist will check for signs of cavities or gum disease and make your teeth extra clean. They can show you the best way to brush to get your teeth clean without damaging your gums. Ask your dentist if an antibacterial mouth rinse is right for you.
- Smile!
