Your baby’s smile is one of their most beloved attributes. Parents can takes steps, even before baby teeth start poking through, to care for that smile for years to come.
Start Early
Your baby’s gums can benefit from a gentle cleaning after every feeding. Wipe their gums with a damp washcloth, piece of gauze or a dental wipe wrapped around one finger. This clears fragments of food from their mouth, as well as builds a habit of caring for your baby’s oral health.
First Tooth
Once the first tooth emerges, it is time to start using a soft bristled, infant toothbrush. Toothpaste is not necessary at this stage. Simply dip the toothbrush in water and gently brush. There are several options available when choosing a toothbrush for your infant. A long-handled toothbrush allows you and your baby to both hold it at the same time. A finger shaped toothbrush fits over the tip of your pointer finger for an easy reach into your baby’s mouth. The oblong shape of a safety toothbrush prevents over insertion into the mouth. There is even a toothbrush that disguises itself as a teether.
Introducing Toothpaste
After a few more teeth appear, you may start putting a tiny amount of toothpaste on your child’s toothbrush. For the first two years, use a toothpaste that does not contain fluoride because too much fluoride can be harmful to your toddler. Take turns brushing your child’s teeth with them. To prepare your youngster for fluoridated toothpaste, begin having them practice spitting the toothpaste out after brushing. Brushing their baby teeth twice a day can prevent future dental issues and help your child feel and understand the importance of a clean mouth!
