The City of Bolivar leaders voted to stop adding fluoride to the city’s water supply due to a budget deficit. It costs the city about $20,000 a year to add fluoride to the water system. This breaks down to about $2 per person, per year.
Bolivar Family Dental is very disappointed in this decision. Dr. Paul Gonzales points out that other communities are trying to progress and add flouride to their water systems, and we’re taking a step back. Our main concern is that this decision will eventually lead to tooth decay in local residents. This prevention cost is minor compared to major restorative cost.
There is enough fluoride left to treat the city’s water for two more months. City leaders have stated that they may reconsider adding fluoride to the water in the future.
