What is a Dental Laser?

0

A dental laser is a high-tech instrument that releases a focused beam of light energy. The dentist adjusts the wavelength and intensity of the light based upon whether the dental procedure is on hard or soft tissue and the desired result.

Types of Dental Laser Procedures

Dentists use lasers to carry out a wide range of procedures, ranging from hygiene to surgery. Examples include whitening teeth, reshaping gums, treating cavities and lengthening crowns. The technology also regenerates damaged nerves and treats gum disease.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Laser technology has several advantages over traditional dental equipment, such as the dental drill. Laser technology may eliminate the apprehension that some patients experience while receiving dental care. It can kill bacteria without the requirement for a local anesthetic. The heat from the light gently numbs and sterilizes gum tissue. The dentist may also utilize the laser to identify early signs of tooth decay.

The instrument can precisely target and remove diseased tissue while sparing surrounding healthier teeth and gums. Laser procedures are usually painless and faster than traditional treatments. There is less bleeding and the patient heals faster.

This enables the dentist to perform more treatments in a shorter period. Laser dentistry may also enable the dentist to perform complex procedures in the office, which eliminates the need for referrals or hospitalization. One example is the removal of a benign tumor from inside the mouth. An experienced laser dentist can perform this procedure without sutures to close the wound.

Is Laser Dentistry Safe?

Professional dentists undergo extensive training to ensure that they understand how to use the device and to protect their patients. One safety precaution is the use of protective eyewear.

Laser dentistry research began in 1964, and the FDA approved the use of dental lasers in 1996. Since that time, dentists have used laser technology for thousands of dental procedures. Numerous published studies document the safety of the device.
