Regular dental visits are one of the most important things you can do to be proactive about your dental health. You can keep your teeth and gums in check with visits to your local dental office, in which your dentist will not only check up on your teeth, but a dental hygienist will also clear out any harmful plaque and tartar in a routine cleaning. It gives your dentist a chance to look for anything unusual in the teeth and gums and schedule more dental visits if needed.
What To Expect
If you’re going to a new dentist for the first time or haven’t had x-rays in a year or more, the dental hygienist may start you out with a few x-ray images of your teeth so the dentist can take a look at what is going on beyond the gums. Sometimes they may find additional teeth that haven’t reached the gum surface yet, shadows on the x-ray that show signs of infection or inflammation, or even wisdom teeth impacting your molars. After taking the x-ray images, they’ll check for any visible signs of cavities, inflammation or other conditions. This is a good time to discuss any problems or pain you’ve been experiencing in the teeth or gums.
In a routine cleaning, the hygienist does a deep cleaning of the teeth and the lining of the gums to get rid of plaque and tartar that can cause the teeth to separate from the gums in time. While brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is a great way to be proactive, it’s still important to have a hygienist do a deep cleaning once or twice a year for the best preventative care.
Once the cleaning is finished, the dentist comes in to check up on everything and look at your x-rays. From here, they may recommend some treatment plan if anything is brought to their attention, or they may need to quickly fill some cavities. In ideal cases, everything with your teeth is OK and don’t need any further treatment beyond the routine cleaning.
Don’t Avoid the Dentist
It’s extremely important to schedule these regular dentist visits to keep your teeth and gums healthy. If you have a problem, like periodontal disease or an infection in the roots of one of your teeth, it will do more harm to avoid the problem and not seek care for it. With regular dentist visits, you can catch problems quickly and treat them before the problems strengthen or spread to other areas of the mouth. Serious diseases and illnesses can come from not taking proper care of the teeth, and infections within the teeth could spread to other parts of the body if not treated.
Be sure to keep up with regular dental visits and schedule a teeth cleaning appointment with a trusted dentist every six months to a year. With effective and preventative care, you can ensure a strong and healthy smile for years to come.
