The Importance of Dental Care for Men

0

Even though men are at greater risk for developing gum disease and oral or throat cancer than women, they are less likely to seek preventive dental care. Additionally, certain things, such as taking medication, playing sports, and smoking can put men at even higher risk of developing dental problems. However, a few simple things can help men keep healthy teeth and gums, and prevent dental problems.

Medication

Many men may need to take medication for a medical condition. Some medications, such as antidepressants, heart, and blood pressure medication can cause dry mouth. Saliva helps wash away food particles, reducing the amount of bacteria that causes cavities.

Men can combat dry mouth in several ways. Specifically, men can avoid smoking, refrain from drinking caffeine, carbonated beverages, and alcohol, and avoid eating very salty foods. Chewing sugarless gum and using a non-alcoholic mouthwash also help combat dry mouth.

Sports

Playing sports puts men at increased risk for mouth injuries. Men can easily prevent mouth injuries by utilizing a mouth guard when they play contact sports, such as hockey, football, basketball, and soccer. Men who ride motorcycles or bicycles should always wear a helmet as well.

Smoking

Smoking or chewing tobacco puts men at even greater risk for developing oral cancer or gum disease. Men who smoke should have regular oral cancer screenings by their dentists. The most common areas oral cancer occurs in the mouth are the tongue, soft palate tissue on the back of the tongue, gums, the floor of the mouth, and the lips.

Dental Care Tips

Men can keep their mouths healthy by taking good care of their teeth. Brushing teeth for two to three minutes at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste is one way to keep teeth healthy. Additionally, flossing every day and brushing at the gum line will help men prevent dental problems. Men should also change their toothbrushes every three months or after they have been sick as well.

While men are at increased risk for certain dental problems, utilizing these tips can help them keep their teeth healthy. Getting regular checkups and preventive care from a local dentist twice a year will also help men prevent dental problems.
